ADDRESSING PUBLIC HEALTH PRIORITIES
Initiatives
The Council is overseeing a growing number of initiatives that address the UAE’s public health priorities as part of the National Genome Strategy.
Emirati Genome Program (EGP)
A foundational programme under the National Genome Strategy and one of the most comprehensive genomic initiatives in the world, the EGP is using the latest sequencing and AI technologies to generate high quality genome data critical to the research and development of advanced healthcare solutions.
The programme aims to collect one million genetic samples from citizens nation-wide, and is working with research and medical institutions across the UAE towards realising the country’s advanced healthcare vision.
UAE Reference Genome
The UAE Reference Genome study is analysing more than 50,000 genome samples using new generation sequencing technology. It will provide a foundation for understanding the genetic basis of health and disorders for citizens.
It will also help identify specific genetic health risks for each citizen and allow for preliminary prevention and personalised precision treatments. The programme is carried out in collaboration with the best researchers and institutions in the country.
Pilot Programmes
Work is underway on a number of clinical programmes that use available genetic data and insights, including the first personalised precision medicine programme for oncology in the region initially targeting breast cancer, the advanced pre-marital and pre-natal genetic screening programmes, the pharmacogenomics programme and the rare and metabolic diseases programme.
As part of its mission, the Emirates Genome Council is advancing progress towards the country’s preventive and personalised healthcare agenda in collaboration with regulatory, research, technology and medical institutions across the country.
